This last year further amplified the need for our industry to keep pushing forward to provide rural America with top-notch broadband. We’ve seen billions of dollars at both the state and federal level poured into connecting rural communities, but as we know, money alone won’t solve the problem. It became more important than ever for us to come together, even if it wasn’t feasible to meet in person, to discuss not only how to bring broadband to our customers, but to ensure that our companies are successful while doing it.

The theme of our 2021 Management Seminar was “Succeeding in a Broadband World.” Among the hot topics we discussed were:

JSI Welcomes Patrick Gault as Its New Chief Revenue Officer

Patrick GaultJSI is pleased to announce the appointment of Patrick Gault as its corporate Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) effective March 29, 2021. Pat takes the helm of JSI’s sales and marketing efforts with the goal of expanding JSI’s footprint geographically and among all facets of the telecom industry.

Prior to joining JSI, Pat honed his sales and marketing skills with various telecom equipment and software companies. Most recently he was a sales director for Ciena Corporation, where he sold Ethernet switching, optical transport, network automation and software solutions to rural telecom companies throughout the western United States. He also spent time at Cyan (which was acquired by Ciena in 2015), Ekinops Corporation, Tellabs Corporation, White Rock Networks, and Cisco Systems.

“Pat has been in our rural space for a long time,” said JSI CEO Tasos Tsolakis. “His combined financial and technical expertise will allow him to partner with JSI’s clients as they continue to grow their broadband networks and services.”

Pat is a graduate of Purdue University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, and of North Central College, where he completed a master’s in computer science. He is based in Littleton, Colorado.

Vern Dosch Joins the JSI Board of Directors

Industry veteran adds decades of experience and expertise to the industry’s premier business management consulting and engineering firm

JSI is pleased to welcome industry stalwart Vern Dosch to the JSI Board of Directors. Vern’s 47-year career in both the rural telecom and electric industries provides additional value and expertise to JSI’s nearly 60 years of serving rural America.

As an outside director, Vern joins Co-Chairmen Manny and Leo Staurulakis and CEO Tasos Tsolakis in helping set the strategy for the company.

“Vern’s addition to the JSI Board of Directors provides even greater insight into the rural broadband industry and how to best meet the needs and opportunities of JSI’s clients,” said Leo Staurulakis, JSI. “Vern has a deep understanding of both telecom and electric utilities and appreciates the need to ensure responsible broadband deployment by leveraging the expertise and strengths each industry brings to the rural markets.”

“It is an honor to join the JSI board. I have worked alongside JSI for decades, so I know firsthand their well-deserved strong reputation in the industry,” said Vern Dosch. “The robust services that JSI provides to clients are critical for the future of rural broadband providers.”

Vern recently retired as NISC’s president and CEO. NISC is a billing and software cooperative established in 2000. Since his first job at an electric distribution cooperative, Vern’s entire career has been focused on supporting rural telecom and electric utilities with solutions to better serve consumers. Vern has also provided guidance and leadership to national, regional and state associations.

JSI Staff Supports FRS with Virtual 5K

Several members of JSI’s staff laced up their sneakers and braved the summer heat for a good cause. They joined runners and walkers all across America who took part in the Foundation for Rural Service’s first virtual 5K Rural Run. The fun run was to raise money for FRS’s programs that benefit rural communities. Way to go JSI!

JSI Applauds Connect Illinois Grant Winners

JSI congratulates the winners of the recently awarded Connect Illinois Broadband Grants. JSI assisted several companies with their applications, helping them win nearly $11 million in funding to construct state-of-the-art broadband networks in unserved and underserved communities in Illinois:

  • Allpoint NetworX’s $2.7 million grant will allow it to deploy up to 1Gb broadband to 926 premises, specifically 846 unserved households and 80 unserved businesses, farms, and community anchor institutions, located in Bond County and a portion of Madison County.
  • Grafton Technologies, Inc. will use its $1.5 million grant build a fiber network to serve 460 unserved households and 124 unserved businesses, farms, and community anchor institutions in parts of Jersey County, including a low-income community considered an opportunity zone which requires long-term investment and job creation.
  • Illinois Fiber Connect, LLC’s $4.9 million grant will help pay for a broadband network that will serve a total of 844 premises, specifically 755 unserved households and 89 unserved businesses, farms, and community anchor institutions in Effingham County.
  • Wabash Telephone’s $1.6 million grant will serve 659 unserved households, businesses, farms, and community anchor institutions in parts of Clay County with 24 miles of fiber cable.

This first round of Connect Illinois grants provided $50 million to expand of high-speed Internet in Illinois. Applicants were eligible for up to $5 million per project and they are required to provide a non-state funding match of at least 50%. Illinois plans to issue another round of grants in the program later this year.

Our 100% success rate in the Illinois Connect Grant program builds upon JSI’s recent success in state and federal broadband grant programs. More than 60% of the companies that worked with JSI on their applications in the first round of USDA’s ReConnect Pilot Program won more than $150 million in grants and loans. JSI has also helped companies win grants in Michigan and Indiana.

With our record of clear success, JSI is ready to help broadband providers pursue critical broadband funding. Our depth allows us to help applicants with all aspects of state and federal grant applications, including mapping of potential funding areas, preparing the required financials, performing a competitive analysis of the potential areas, and shepherding clients through the full application process.

JSI Names Tasos Tsolakis as CEO & Steve Meltzer as President

JSI is pleased to announce a new leadership team at JSI effective June 1, 2020: Tasos Tsolakis in the newly established role of CEO and Steve Meltzer in his new role as President. Tasos will lead JSI’s strategic vision and growth initiatives, as well as product and service development. Steve will lead the day-to-day business operations and the continuity of services. Manny and Leo Staurulakis remain as Co-Chairmen of JSI and will continue to be involved with client activities, as well as providing general oversight and strategic guidance in support of Tasos and Steve.

“Tasos brings years of experience in technology, telecommunications and cybersecurity, most recently serving as SVP of Global Service Delivery at Continuum Managed Services,” said Manny Staurulakis. “JSI has long been a recognized leader in our industry due to our capable and dedicated staff, our diverse and innovative client base, and our strategic vision. As CEO, Tasos will continue to advance and grow JSI’s prominence year after year, ” he continued.

JSI Names Dan Freiman as CFO

JSI is pleased to announce the appointment of Dan Freiman as our corporate CFO effective June 1, 2020. Dan is responsible for all aspects of finance, as well as IT and human resources.

Prior to joining JSI, Dan was the CFO of NII Holdings (formerly Nextel International), a $620 million provider of wireless communications in Latin America. Dan brings over 25 years of experience in finance, including nearly two decades in telecommunications, and has served in many positions including CFO, Vice President & Treasurer, Vice President & Controller, and Director of Investor Relations. Dan started his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Dan’s extensive background in M&A and strategic & financial options will help drive JSI’s growth and expansion efforts.

“We look forward to leveraging Dan’s expertise to expand JSI and position us to capture new opportunities as the broadband and communications sector continues to evolve,” said Tasos Tsolakis, CEO, JSI.

Dan is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA with a concentration in finance. Dan is also a CPA. He was recognized by Treasury and Risk Magazine in October 2010 as one of the 40 top business leaders under the age of 40. Dan resides in Potomac, MD with his wife Shari and son Andrew. He enjoys traveling, playing tennis and spending time with his family.

JSI Introduces its COVID-19 Financial Impact Model

The JSI team wishes its clients, their families, and members of their organizations well during this very trying time. Over the course of the last week or so, many clients have indicated concern surrounding the COVID-19 virus and the potential disruptive effects it could have on their finances, and have reached out to engage us to either conduct an analysis or validate their own forecasts.

With the prospect of the magnitude of the disruption all businesses face in 2020, JSI has created an insightful tool that allows your company to easily and rapidly:

  • Model a range of varying impacts, of both magnitude and timing, to end user-based revenue streams;
  • Understand at what displacement levels falling below minimum desired levels of liquid working cash and/or negative cash flow are experienced;
  • Model what impact scenarios result in debt service coverage falling below acceptable levels;
  • Define impact on EBITDA and cash flow at varying levels of service disruption in absolute terms, and in relation to budget;
  • Model an array of contingency “what-ifs” that dynamically illustrate the foregoing stats based on varying levels of assumed:
