NANPA Shortens 10-Digit Dialing NPA List, Identifies Carrier Milestones

The FCC’s 988 Order requires all telecommunications carriers, interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers, and one-way VoIP providers to make changes to their networks to implement 988 by July 16, 2022. To accomplish the goal of routing 988 directly to the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Hotline number, 1-800-273-TALK (8255), 82 area codes must transition to 10-digit dialing (10DD) before the implementation deadline.

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator’s (NANPA) list of area codes required to transition to 10DD has shortened from 87 to 82 due to NANPA removing 3 area codes that are already transitioning to 10-digit dialing due to an overlay and the return of 904-988 and 701-988.
