We are looking for someone with a passion for connectivity, communications, and client service, working in a cross-matrixed and cross-functional environment. JSI is a full-service consulting firm, providing operational, financial, management, engineering, regulatory and strategic assistance to independent community-based communications providers. You will work in our Greenbelt, Maryland, office for our Regulatory Affairs Department, which assists telecom, broadband, video/cable and wireless clients comply with a host of federal and state rules and regulations, including assessing regulations and their impact; design and enactment of effective compliance procedures; and assistance in filing required applications and waiver requests.

JSI’s Regulatory Affairs Department is committed to developing, maintaining, and enhancing successful relationships with existing and potential clients; advising clients on compliance with federal and state laws, rules, and regulations; and representing clients before the Federal Communications Commission, the National Telecommunications & Information Administration, the Rural Utilities Service, and other federal and state agencies through written (e.g., ex partes, petitions, waivers, and comments) and oral advocacy.

As an intern, you will research and write on a variety of policy and regulatory issues related to technology, media, and telecommunications. Candidates can expect to prepare briefing memos, talking points, comment summaries, and other written material to facilitate clients’ compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. This may also include reviewing contracts and drafting policies. You will work with staff to determine the impact of federal and state actions, develop presentations and other written materials, and act as an internal consultant to the Regulatory Affairs team. Interns will also generally support the Regulatory Affairs Department, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled full-time and pursuing a Juris Doctor Degree (graduate students will also be considered)
  • Strong research and writing skills required
  • Good presentation and communication skills required
  • Highly motivated self-starter
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and able to work and thrive in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to handle multiple assignments, meet tight deadlines, and make decisions relying on sound judgment
  • Ability to work well with individuals across diverse teams and cultures
  • Proficiency in software programs such as Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat
  • Available to work full-time for at least 10 weeks during summer 2022 in the Greenbelt, MD office
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated interest in the telecommunications industry

The Regulatory Affairs Department is a strengths-based team that provides regulatory, legislative, policy, and compliance counsel to JSI departments and JSI clients. Specifically, we offer services in three distinct areas: (1) federal compliance, (2) federal advocacy and strategy, and (3) state compliance and policy.

With decades of staff expertise ranging from state public service commissions to the Federal Communications Commission and in-house communications companies, we advise clients, develop strategies, and implement projects for clients on various issues before state and federal agencies and departments. We partner with other JSI departments to identify, assess, and manage state and federal funding projects for clients.
